Explaining Brexit: The 5 A’s - Anomie, Alienation, Austerity, Authoritarianism and Atavism

Although support for Britain’s withdrawal in the 2016 Referendum emanated from all sections of society, it was much stronger and prevalent among specific socio-economic demographic cohorts, namely older citizens, people who had received a minimal formal education their youth, those on low incomes. These were citizens benefited least, whose communities suffered most, four decades deindustrialisation, globalisation, neoliberalism, apparent neglect or abandonment by politicians Westminster London-centric national media. Leave voters (Brexiters) also notable extent to which they shared five social, cultural political attitudes, characteristics experiences, beginning with letter ‘a’: anomie, alienation, austerity, authoritarianism atavism. Only examining these aspects can we fully comprehend fears, frustrations, grievances resentments underpinned EU Referendum, why very strongly concentrated British society.
